Prom with a Purpose

I wish I'd had a prom like this when I was a kid

For our children, we dreamed of a different kind of prom experience.

As Christian homeschoolers forging outside-the-box paths, we believe in doing nothing simply because public schools do it. We are Kingdom builders—called to redeem our culture for Christ. For our family, that has always included redeeming dance. Group dance has been a part of worthy cultures throughout history, yet it has largely been lost in modern Western—and even Christian—contexts. We’re out to change that. (You can read more about

Eighteen years ago, that conviction led us to start a Scottish Ball at our church—something like a family prom—built around heritage group dance rather than couple-focused dance, celebrating all ages dancing together in multigenerational faithfulness. That annual event grew into teaching and calling dances for churches, balls, proms, barn dances, and weddings… which led to Homeschool Homecoming in 2022, and now, our Enchanted Prom.

Traditional Jr/Sr proms often bring many pressures homeschooling families want to avoid: romantic expectations, immodesty, awkward social hierarchies, students left on the sidelines, and a host of "firsts" expectations I don't even want to think about. Remember the slow songs and the infamous rock-rock (and sometimes more). That was never the kind of rite of passage we wanted for our children.

So we asked ourselves a question: What if prom could be—

           different

            ?

We envisioned a prom with a purpose: kingdom-building. Spiritual warfare dressed up in black-tie, declaring that wholesome, godly fun is the very best kind of fun. So wholesome it's "safe" for the Freshmen and so thrilling the recent grads want to come back. A prom focused on heritage dance, carefully curated and expertly called—a cut above—so that dancing is exciting, delightful, effortless, confidence-building, and focused on group achievement rather than romance. Designed not as a Jr/Sr-only milestone, but as a normalizing experience—one students attend from early high school through aging out, and later return to our other dances as adults and parents, bringing their own families along. Community is formed. Joy is shared. Culture is built.

            Here’s how that plays out:

✅ Unparallelled world-class facility with "the most danceable floor in the world."

            ✅ Black-tie

✅ Nearly 100% participation in heritage dances—this is why students come, not an afterthought

            ✅ Group-focused, not couple-focused (no slow songs)

✅ Curated music that becomes part of the experience—kids spontaneously sing, clap, and laugh together

✅ Godly, welcoming students who are genuinely kind and inclusive

✅ Christ-centered without being preachy, bookended with the Doxology and Gloria Patri

✅ Modern music with DJ Iman Tucker, a godly Christian man, one of the best DJs in the U.S., and the Bringer of THE PARTY, creating the best of both worlds. Elegance meets electricity.

✅ An opulent, start-to-finish experience, replete with the little details that create the "aaah" effect.

There's a myth that homeschoolers lack any number of things the public schools provide. A prom like this rejects that premise and intentionally creates some of the most defining experiences of their youth. These core memories help create the moments students realize: "We didn't miss out -- we experienced

I love what you do! How can I help the vision come true?

            We're so happy you asked!

Every movement begins the same way -- God gives an idea and someone catches the vision. They see not only what

           is,

            but what

           could be.

Ours is simple: To joyfully build the Kingdom through vibrant heritage dance.

We believe dance can do more than entertain - it can build culture, connect generations, and reflect joy. We envision a flourishing Christian culture where heritage dance is the natural, cherished choice at balls, weddings, and gatherings of all kinds. And by God's grace, that vision is already unfolding - because people like you have caught it. We are often asked "How can we help?" Well, since you asked...

            Come Dancing! Come and see

            how

            good

             it really is.

It's no fun to throw a party and not have people attend. When you make attendance a priority, you encourage others. You build community. You make it fun for others. Your presence matters! It's an energy thing.

Invite friends and relatives. Boss 'em.

to continue to use this ministry to build Christian culture into families and communities. To build the Kingdom. To keep the hearts of the parents turned towards the children and the hearts of the children turned towards their parents. For families to see there could be a better way. For the vision to catch wind and spread like wildfire. To protect us from The Enemy. To strengthen our arms and bring everything necessary to us. For us to remain resolute and resilient. For hearts to be opened and softened, and for the Lord to go before us. For young people of marrying age to find one another and continue the love of this dance into their future marriages and children. To multiply the resources we do have and keep us faithful with those. And, that we would always have the most fun ever in accomplishing that which He would have us do.

. We are busy helping people to envision how beautiful this dance culture can be, but it's hard for people to believe just us. It happens ALL. THE. TIME. People approach us and wax eloquent about the experience, the impact, the differences in their lives, etc. We LOVE hearing it, but that's just between the two or three of us. What really helps is leaving honest and heartfelt reviews online.

Have you noticed? We've all heard the stories by now -- the ones that make your heart sink a little. Big name NGOs and charitable organizations that - behind the polished marketing and emotional appeals -- are anything but aboveboard. Some are simply wasting money - up to 98% of contributions used for "administration." Others tangled in corruption, money laundering, waste, and WORSE... unmentionable deeds not fit for a family blog. Board members drawing six-figure salaries, friends and relatives hired for unnecessary "consulting" roles, endless overhead, glossy ads, emotional manipulation, inflated administrative costs that drain donor dollars before they ever reach the cause. Charities that claim to fight poverty spending more on galas than groceries. Foundations that pay "management fees" that quietly swallow half of the budget. Nonprofits that never actually intended to eradicate the disease they are named after, who exist more to sustain their own structure than to serve their stated mission. Even some churches with bloated budgets, spending it on dubious causes that do anything but actually build the Kingdom. It's discouraging, isn't it? Especially for those of us who really believed the organizations were trying to

At Steps in Time, we've chosen authenticity, integrity, and transparency. This "dance thing" is more than our vision. It's our dream... our baby... our such a time as this... and we would do it with or without compensation. Our board members receive no salary. Every dollar that comes in is used with care, accountability, and purpose. We fundraise not for luxury, but for accessibility - to keep our prices as low as possible so more families can participate, and to make sure cost never keeps a young person from the chance to belong.

charge the value our dances deserve. We could, but we don't. Many of our flagship events are geared towards homeschool (and small private Christian coops and school students), an historically underserved and double burdened population. Not only do these families pay property taxes to fund public school students' education, they pay out-of-pocket for every single piece of basic education their own children receive, not to mention any "extras." And because someone needs to be the one teaching, these families are often making ends meet with one income. Moreover, many of these families are large families, stretching budgets with the creativity of a kid with a cardboard box and a roll of duct tape.

Many experiences public school students take for granted are simply unavailable or out of reach for homeschoolers, co-ops, and small private Christian schoolers. Take Proms and homecoming dances for example. Most children in the US attend school dances that are heavily subsided by the school and the government. The prices they pay to attend are typically very low for the quality received. High-ticket venues and DJs can be no problem for these school budgets.

Not so for homeschooled and small Christian school students. First of all, small private Christian schools with a grand total of 6 high school students cannot possibly accomplish a prom, and neither could homeschool co-ops. The experiences we provide are second to none and simply out of range without a coordinated effort. So, while we

In 2025 alone, we called dozens of events, earning thousands of dollars for Steps in Time. We did incur travel and food expenses along the way, which were reimbursed, but we put in significantly more than we took out. All that to say, we have our own skin in this game, and are not asking anyone to do anything that we ourselves are unwilling to do.

Bring dance and joy to small organizations - often at little or no cost, meeting them where they are financially.

Maintain and repair equipment - lighting, sound systems, decor, and all the tools that keep our events beautiful and functional.

And maybe... just maybe one day... we could build an event center of our own, one dedicated to Christian events with Christian dance. Dream with us...

While we envision a day when we will be able to pay professionals what they deserve for the work they do for us, it will always be transparent and measured. He who is faithful in little will be given much.

When you give to us, you're not funding an office tower or corporate salary. Your gift doesn't disappear into bureaucracy. It goes directly into the laughter, the music, and the movement that changes the culture and brings people together and build's the Kingdom. We're not perfect, but we are honest, transparent, and deeply committed to integrity, and we're not asking for anything we ourselves are not doing.

So, as you consider where to give this season, please consider us in your giving. Your generosity, whether large or small, helps us keep the doors open, the lights glowing, and the smiles flowing.

           Somewhere in rural Indiana

lives a young family who caught the vision. In today’s world, the young husband works diligently at his job — and even takes on a side gig — to support his wife and two small children on one income. Yet every month, this couple has chosen to set aside a portion of that hard-earned money, automatically deducted from their account, and donated to us in love.

Somewhere out there is another man, laboring by day and by night to provide for his family. He works to stay ahead of his obligations, to save for a rainy day, to live below his means, and to put food on the table, warmth in the home, and clothes on the backs of those he loves. And still, he carves out a portion for us.

Somewhere in Kentucky lives a sweet widow and her new husband. Though she faces deep, hard physical and emotional trials—and though she supports many causes dear to her heart—she and her husband sacrificed a piece of their future and sent a check to us. It felt a little like the Widow's mite.

             — is not lost on us.

Somewhere on the east side of town is a woman who has caught the vision. She tells everyone she meets about what we’re doing, organizing events, selling tickets and rallying the troops. She sends texts, pictures, and encouragement. She prays for us, and if our doors are open, her family and her people are there.

Somewhere nearby is a skilled graphic artist who believes in what we’re doing. Night or day, it matters not. As ideas pour in, she graciously opens her laptop and brings them to life. With a keen creative eye and a steady hand, she creates beautiful designs that make us look better than we are. She shares her connections and makes the difficult seem simple.

Somewhere north of town lives a young homeschooling graduate with a gift for lighting technology—and another with a gift for videography. They believe in this mission, too, and have lent their talents so our teens can experience something extraordinary.

Somewhere there are sports organizations who caught the dream of a homecoming dance for their teams, so they supported us and spread the word and encouraged us in so many ways.

Somewhere there are hardworking venue owners, putting in 60 hour work weeks to make their dreams come true, yet generously work with us on price, or donate altogether, especially during non-booked nights. "I don't want to make money on you."

Somewhere in farm country is a homeschooled teenage girl who drives tractors and forklifts, cleans and decorates barns, throws hay, and has a sharp eye for design. Without being asked, she brings joy to life at our dances and spreads the word on social media with a flair that these “old folks” could never dream up.

Somewhere all over town, everyday men and women are digging through their closets for something to wear. They’re brushing up on dance moves, and stepping onto the floor to help people find a partner, get into place, and know what to do. They notice holes in the system and fill in wherever needed, making it all look easy. Chaperones who go all in bless us immeasurably.

Somewhere in northern Indianapolis is a woman with a keen eye for videos and marketing. Though she has 60 man hours of work to accomplish per week between homeschooling and career, she makes kid-approved reels and offers her wisdom and ideas.

Somewhere in a warehouse garage are party buses and limos, gassed and ready to go, driven by a company whose owner who was willing to think outside the box and serve our attendees. With a heart bursting in generosity, he said, "It's time for me to give back. Bring more kids. We'll fit 'em in."

Somewhere in the heart of the city is a homeschool mom who volunteers to be the volunteer of all volunteers. She toils behind the scenes—fueled by adrenalin, sweat, and smiles—turning random bags of groceries into an elegant spread that could rival the finest caterers in the land, without accepting anything in return.

Somewhere in northern Indiana is a farmer who loads up his tractor so kids can experience an actual hayride. There's a flower farm who loves to string lights and invite dancers. There's a grandma who notices when we’ve run out of hot cocoa mix—and bustles in to make more from scratch. Nearby is a mom who notices the volunteers are covered and jumps in enthusiastically to help, bringing all her wedding planning expertise to bear.

Somewhere on the outskirts of town is a well-known businessman who loves the Lord and believes in the cause. He counsels, advises, and shares his time, wisdom, and contacts.

Somewhere there are moms who are already covered with daily life, serving their families, yet take the time to plan dances, spreading the dream and texting everyone they know.

Somewhere is a sports field manager who says, "Those other guys will charge you a mint. Just use our field for practice."

Somewhere there are students calling their relatives across the country to convince them to make the drive to Indiana for the best dances ever.

Somewhere there are brides and grooms who want to set the stage for how they will raise their children, in Christian community.

Somewhere there are professionals of every kind, gifted in every area, and trained through the hard times, at the top of their career, who could charge what they are worth, but don't. There is a photographer who takes a photo every 5.6 seconds and dedicates countless hours in editing and perfecting. Likely he earns a dollar an hour for his work with us. There's a woman who knows non-profit organizations inside and out who takes her time to offer tips and lessons learned.

Somewhere out there are homeschooled teens and young adults who never miss an event. With equal love for dance and for people, they show up, bring the energy, and keep the joy alive. They learn and teach the dances and strategically make certain everyone who wants to dance, gets to dance. When they sense chaos beginning in a corner of the room, they spring into action to bring everything into alignment. They do it all with infectious joy and energy. They are leaders, and they set the example that other kids follow. Every dance they roll up on turns into THE party. They’ve never asked for payment—and have refused it on several occasions. They are definitely “the cool kids.”

Somewhere in the suburbs of Indiana are small business owners and managers who work harder than they’re paid to—but whose generosity overflows. They bless us with gift cards, in-kind donations, and support for our fundraisers.

Somewhere in the Midwest are homeschool co-op teachers and leaders who’ve caught the vision. They’re organizing, encouraging, and inspiring their teens to take a chance—on dance.

Somewhere late at night sits a man awash in the blue glow of a computer screen, hair tousled, eyes burning, pouring over spreadsheets to make the Gordian Knot of table assignment requests make sense. He does it for the dream of a well-run event and a frictionless experience for every attendee.

Somewhere in rural Illinois is a farmer who opens her barns and hayracks to University of Illinois Christian fraternities, sororoties, and homeschooling organizations so they can have actual barn dances. Their loft above the barn is often home to weary dance callers and their gang, to save on travel expenses.

Somewhere across the country are more moms and dads, who want something spectacular for their families. They are investing countless hours into making sure everything comes together at the right time in the right place with the right people dressed the right way, and they are entrusting to us the most precious and valuable things in life -- their children.

Yes, it’s true that we began with our own seed money—and that we carve off no compensation for the hundreds of hours of administrative work that go into this mission. But we’re not the story behind the magic. These unsung heroes understand that we were not put on this earth for the purpose of paying our mortgages. We were put here by God Almighty to SERVE God's people.

You ask how we accomplish all we do—for the Kingdom?

The answer is simple: our gracious Heavenly Father gives us both the will and to do.

He put this dream on our hearts—and then placed it on the hearts of others.

We could never do this alone.

Every act of service, every donation, every prayer, every bit of effort—matters deeply.

We only hope that each one who gives, serves, and believes knows how loved and appreciated they are.

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.”

Caller's Delight

           Talking to electricity

What I wish I could bottle are the smiles. Once the steps are learned and my eyes drift from the feet to the faces—

           it

meets me there- the magical wonderment: Row after row, smile after smile- Deep, genuine, and contagious, like electrified energy. It’s an antidote to a weary, disconnected world, these small pockets where surprise, delight, and connection stand as a beacon of hope.

There’s so much right in those moments. Dancers, new and experienced, young and old, laughing, conspiring, and sharing together. No words can truly hold it. You have to taste it for yourself to believe it.

I wish everyone could be the caller—you witness things the dancers don’t, zooming in to view the kaleidoscope unfolding, to notice every small human interaction. You’re in it, yet somehow above it, drinking it all in. After everyone is dancing, I tend to fade into this background, becoming one with the music and the faces, writing them on the pages of my heart, wishing it could last an eternity. I imagine this is what a painter must feel, observing his canvas come to life, setting the strokes in motion and watching the colors dance in joy.

Perhaps one day, I’ll find a way to bottle those moments and pour them out for you to understand. In the meantime, come dance with us. Taste and see for yourself how enchanting dance can be.

The Wedding in Which I Was a Dancer Rather than the Caller

The wedding we attended in North Carolina recently was utterly dreamy. There was joy and laughter and singing and Scripture and dancing... our favorite kind of dancing, and again, here's the part that stood out...

           I wasn't the caller.

As the day progressed, I occasionally found my mind wandering to the upcoming reception. Would there be dancing? What kind? Would I get a quick slow dance with my husband or perhaps even a swing with one of my kids? It never dawned on me there might be OUR kind of dancing. So when the announcement suddenly rang out over the speakers that we should line up for the Virginia Reel, my eyes caught fire. "DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?!" I half-yelled at Ron. It means "I get to DAAAAANNNNCCCEEEE!!! COME ON!!!" Not waiting to be asked properly, I grabbed Ron's hand and half ran, half floated to the top of the set, not even considering that it might not be proper. I was in a delirium.

The Virginia Reel, The Boston Tea Party, a few line dances, some swing dances with my kids, and even POSTIE'S JIG!!! WHAT JOY! WHAT BLISS! I was transported to the 6th grade gymnasium where I first loved dance. It has been so long since I was on the receiving end of this merriment that I had almost forgotten.

I knew it was fun. I had forgotten HOW fun.

I knew it brought joy. I had forgotten HOW MUCH joy.

I knew it was bonding. I had forgotten HOW bonding.

I knew it was memory-making. I had forgotten HOW memory-making.

I knew it was community-forming. I had forgotten HOW community-forming.

Now, I remember why people come. As I recall the grateful faces through the years, thanking us for what we do, pleading with their eyes for more opportunities. I remember and am inspired.

"Lori, why do you spend your time calling dances and planning events?"

By "we" I mean me and fifty of the greatest kids I know -- and it wasn't the first time. It's actually almost "common." Here's the back story.

We held a dance at a local park. To us, it was just a typical, normal, usual dance. We strung some lights, put up a few speakers, and invited the people. Fifty kids and a few parents showed up and the revelry began. They danced and sashayed and laughed and jumped and smiled and clapped and sang and cavorted, and formed kick lines and giggled and talked and carried on. Notice I didn't say anything about standing around in cliques or being on phones.

During all the merrymaking, somewhere in the background of the parking lot, in the dark, sat two little golf carts with observers from the town council that had given their approval for the event. During the last dance, my job as a caller having been completed, I walked over to the fence and motioned for them to come chat. One man left his golf cart and approached. I casually asked him what he thought of the shindig that evening. He began to reply then suddenly choked up. Through broken words, he described the beauty he had witnessed. As he shook his head in disbelief, the questions poured out. Was this a certain church? Youth group? School?

No. Just a bunch of good, mostly homeschooled (but not all) kids and parents celebrating life. "It's like it was when I was a kid. I'm an old man, and I didn't think this existed anymore." Thank you for noticing, Sir. You blessed my day and helped me see that what we are doing... matters.

A Different Kind of Love Story

           Community dance and weddings

I had the privilege of calling yet another wedding, and the scene was enchanting. The bride and the groom led the Grand March, and as the guests filed up by twos, then fours, then eights to exchange bows and curtsies, my heart smiled. Each person had the chance to greet the couple in this unique and fun way, and this is where the personalities came out to play. Giggles, jesting, and memories galore, each one playing their part. I didn’t know these people, yet it seemed as though I did. I could feel their joy. It was like watching a love story play out in front of my eyes. A love story of family and friends, of community, of God and His people.

Nearly everybody participated. If they could walk, they were in. Possibly the best part was how many people got to dance, if only for a moment, with the bride and groom. Young and old alike, creating memories together that will last a lifetime.

Electricity filled the air. There is power in music, touch, movement, dance, eye contact, connection, happiness, and these meaningful moments of shared bliss. It’s why the scriptures tell us to greet one another with a holy kiss and remind us that a joyful heart is good medicine.

Weeks after the wedding, I was still receiving kind notes and texts from people who attended that wedding, expressing their joy at being able to participate in such unique and memorable merriment. These are the stories people will be telling their grandchildren when they are old. What a blessed way to begin your life together.

I’ve heard it said that weddings foreshadow the theme of the life the couple desire to lead. For many Christians (and those of all faith traditions) weddings represent multi-generational, covenantal promises for the future of the faith, which is children. They are a time of vows made and hope for a brighter tomorrow, of blessings and wishes for great joy and faithfulness, and it is right and good to make those oaths before, and to celebrate with, witnesses. Traditional dance has thus been a part of wedding celebrations for centuries.

I’ve also heard it said that there are only two times in your life when you are surrounded by all the people who matter most. Your wedding and your funeral. Only one of those days do you get to enjoy. Our gratitude goes out to the brides who have included us in their happily ever after. May God bless you unto a thousand generations. The promise is to you, and your children, and your children’s children. May you always have the kind of joy I witnessed on that momentous day.

Our Philosophy of Dance

           The Purpose of Dance

We take seriously our admonition in Ephesians 6 (“And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”) to raise our children into multigenerational faithfulness. The word used in that Ephesians passage is Paideia, which means to enculturate; to drop your children in the middle of Christian CULTURE and raise them in it. It is far more than reading the bible and attending church. Our faith must permeate everything we do (and not do). We are to teach them to be Christians; to think like Christians, to walk and talk and dance and compete like Christians. To walk in joy and love what Christ loves.

No matter how far back in history you go, dance has been involved in all worthy cultures. The first recorded dance in history was when Miriam, sister to Moses, after witnessing the parting of the Red Sea, took a tambourine and led the women of Israel in a dance. It was common in the United States in years past to host balls and soirees and to engage in group dance. Have you ever attended a Greek, Jewish, Indian, Irish, Chinese, or other ethnic wedding? Did you notice the history of dance being celebrated before your eyes? Why did we American Christians ever stop? As “swing your partner” slowly turned to provocative, suggestive movements, we began to turn aside and ended up abandoning dance completely. Eventually, some churches began to actually preach against and then to ban dance of any kind. How sad.

We are on a mission to reverse that trend. As homeschoolers, we have learned that to capture the hearts of our children, we mustn’t simply say “no, no, no” to what the world has to offer, but rather, say “YES!” to only the BEST. When we fill their love cups with “yeses,” they don’t even notice the “nos.” They aren’t tempted by the offerings because they love Christian culture. Paideia. And, when we say “all ages” we mean ALL ages. All the cool parents dance with a baby on their back.

So, is it our duty as Christians to gather before the Lord in community dance? We believe it is. We pray, “Thy Kingdom COME, not Thy Kingdom go.” In our way of thinking, dance is an expression of covenant theology: old and young, rich and poor, all together, celebrating the joy of the promises, without the icky feelings and awkwardness that comes with other styles of dance, and we intend to redeem it. We believe the Feast of the Lamb will include dance, so why wait? With skilled instruction, everyone soon learns to forget what their feet are doing and just enjoy the fun.

We invite you into our vision. Have Lori Borre call your dance, large or small. Whether or not you fully align with our theology, this will be the most fun you’ve had in ages.
